What were
some of the things your mother always told you? I asked this question of
my students and of many of my Special kids, as well as attendees at one
of my seminars. It's pretty standard in many of the sayings they came up
with like: "When I say NO, I mean NO. What part of NO don't you understand?"
Or,"Ask your Dad." There were many of them that have been passed on by
many families for many years, maybe even generations. See if some of these
are familiar to you:
"Do what
I say, not what I do."
"Stop
crying, or I'll give you something to cry about."
"Eight
hours of work for eight hours of pay."
"You've
made your bed, now lie in it."
"Mind
your P's and Q's." ( I never knew what that meant.)
"Eat
all your food, children in China are starving."
(I'm
still suffering the consequenses of that old saying) |
 |
"Waste not,
want not."
"What
goes around, comes around."
"Never
judge a book by it's cover."
"There's
two sides to every story."
"Wait
til your Father gets home."
"Don't
talk with your mouth full."
"If you
don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."
"This
will hurt me, more than it will you." (Boy, was that one a crock!)
I'm
sure that if you were filling out the answers you could find many, many
more. Try it. Even ask your spouse, significant other, or friends at work.
You'll be surprized how many you can come up with. You'll probably find
many you never even heard of too. Here were a few strange ones I came up
with in my search:
"If you
fall out of a tree and break both legs, Don't come running to me!"
(Can
you believe that one?)
"If your
friends jumped off the bridge, would you do it too?"
"Never
go to bed without your underwear, in case the house catches fire."
"If you
want to run away, I'll help you pack."
"Say
that again and I"ll wash your mouth out with soap."(ICK!)
"He got
your goat, because you let him know where you kept it tied up."
"Just
don't get blood on the carpet!"(I wonder what brought that comment on?)
As I said,
there are probably many more that you could come up with. The amazing thing
is, there is alot of sayings that we've heard all of our lives and we could
probably finish the sentences ourselves once someone started to say it.
We might have heard them many times or only a few times but still we remember
them. Why is it then that we have such a hard time remembering the many
times we received the encouraging or uplifting comments? The times we were
told,
"I
LOVE YOU!"
"YOU
DID A GREAT JOB!"
"YOU
CAN DO, OR BE, ANYTHING YOU WANT TO BE."
"THANKS
FOR THE GREAT JOB YOU DID ON MY LOAN."
We hear
wonderful comments said to us, or about us, and yet we don't hear or remember
those comments very well. Instead we listen for the bad or negative and
remember those comments as if they were truth instead of an opinion, and
maybe an incorrect one from a client who just didn't understand. Maybe
the comment came from a co-worker who was having a bad day and didn't mean
what was said. I guess at times we all wear our feelings on our sleeves.
Right now we are seeing alot of hardship, changes, and tough times for
many of our peers in the lending industry. People who have helped us put
our deals together in many areas of service; Wholesale reps, underwriters,
funders, doc draw people, processors, escrow officers, appraisers, a fellow
loan officer who helped us know where to put that hard to place loan, and
many many more. It's at times like these we need to pull out some
of the things we learned from our Mothers, or other individuals we love,
and share them with those around us who are having a hard time remembering
they are Special and deserve to hear it. Personally, my Grandmother always
said," Connie, where ever you are, BE THERE! " We need to be there for
each other now. Don't be afraid to let others out there know that you have
a kind word and a little bit of encouragement for them. My Grandmother
realized that she was not a failure at her job. It was the Depression that
caused her lack of material things, and lack of food for her family. She
stood above the poverty of the Nation and raised her family well with what
she had. Her strength and self determination carried her through. She believed
in who she was,and what she did, and taught her family well, values that
carried them through to raise their families well. Lets reach out to those
around us in our community and remind each other of the truths of our beliefs
and who we are. VERY SPECIAL PEOPLE!!!! The Greatest gift of all is the
Love Inside of You. SHARE IT!!!!
