Thank you Xu Hong (Monica) for all of the work that you do with the Post Graduate Students and their English Speech Training!
While home in the States for the Spring Semester of 2006, my speech students and classes were left in the capable hands of their student leaders and my wonderful co-coaches Melody Rainwater and Tony Theofanis who also took them to victory. With their guidance my students continued to win. Going into the Semi-Finals of the 2006 CCTV the 7th Annual Star of Outlook English Talent Competition (Jiangxi provincial competition), out of hundreds of students, seventeen (17) of our students made it to the top fifty students. In the Provincial finals eight out of the twenty were from our speech class. In the end, five of the eight went on past the prepared speech and Q&A to rounds consisting of translation and debate. The results were one first place, one second place, and three third prize winners.
Previous students of mine.
This contestant used to be my student when I first came to Jiangxi Normal University. He graduated and went on to be an excellent and highly motivated teacher working at ZhongYiXueYuan. He writes some of the best speeches that I have heard, written by a student in China and using only his own words and ideas, never plagiarizing. He tried out many times for speech contests but never seemed to make it to the top three places. But he NEVER gave up! He has thought it strange that his passion for speech never seemed to pay off for him. That’s not true. As a teacher and coach of speech, his students have started to participate in contests and are doing well. He has even become a judge. I’m SO proud of him, both as a diligent caring teacher and as an English learner who has never given up trying to improve. He finally accomplished one his goals, to place in the top three of a provincial contest. Congratulations James (Chen Zhiyuan), I love you and am so proud of you!
