There was still heavy snow outside with the thick ice covering the land, which made it difficult to walk on the roads, let alone to drive. Spring was coming and there were lots of things that remained to be alone. However, people were all in deep thought because they had been caught in a terrible storm, which had broken the record of the worst storm in the past 50 years.

I have to be thankful because the storm did not cause too much trouble in my hometown. But what I have learned from the TV gave my heart a good beat. My heart ached when I heard the warnings repeated on TV: “The southern part of China, especially HuNan and GuiZhou provinces, have suffered a lot in this storm disaster. Many people could not lead a normal life nor have a nice Spring Festival.” My heart ached when I saw hundreds of thousands of people were detained at the train station, waiting outside for many days in the freezing cold with no food and no water. The young had caught cold and the old had become ill. My heart ached when I learned that tens of thousands of cars were stuck on the freeways that lead to their warm and lovely families. But now, they could not drive on them because of the terrible storm. Thousands of villages and cities had electricity and water cut off with food shortage, houses collapsed and some innocent lives passed away…

I felt sorrow for them. I prayed for them at home. I prayed God would help them and settle down the disaster. When many people felt sad about the bad situation, we saw a lot of heroes busy fighting against the storm. Countless solders and common people helped to wipe out the thick ice on the roads. Groups of electricians gave up the chance to spend the Spring Festival with their families and hurried to the disaster areas voluntarily to help them rebuild their homes. In the crowded station of HuNan province, we have seen the figure of Wen jiabao, premier of the People’s Republic. He flew to the disaster areas many times to care for the people in trouble. As he went into the public station and said: “I am very sorry for the inconveniences the storm has brought. He encouraged us that the present storm would be certainly overcome soon.” That is our premier, that is our government, you know. And by that time, organizations both within and without the area and in effect, the entire population of China had come to the aid of the devastated areas…

My eyes were moist. I have been deeply moved by all of these. I am proud of our efficient government and leaders; I am proud of our brave people and the united nation. We practically lost a great many of our possessions, but all of the country came though it. When I think of that, I realize we have lost nothing important, because we have love in our hearts and our love can melt the thickest ice and overcome anything difficulty.
